project is to improve the reading and writing success of middle and high school students (Irvin, 2005). The National Literacy Project provides educators with the necessary
support and professional development that will lead to improved literacy education school wide.
The model is based on three over arching goals for the educational system to increase literacy for high school students. The three goals are:
- student motivation, engagement, and achievement
- integrating literacy and learning across content-area classrooms and through the use of literacy interventions
- sustaining literacy development by including the school environment, parents and the community, and the district

Literacy is so important. It should be continued all throughout a child's school career from grades 1-12. It's concerning to me that literacy is an issue. We've also seen by recent documentation that our nation is falling behind in math and science, as well. Which leads someone to ask, "Just what are our children learning in school?"
I believe that students should have to pass a competency test. In that way they ill be ready for the harsh world.
Literacy is key to a successful future. Standardized testing should be used to help people that need help.
I think that the education problem is something that needs to be dealt with NOW. Education is important for a productive society, and the government need to do a better job.
i agree 100%!! literacy is very very important. it is the building block for just about anything you would want to do in your life.
I know this to be true, because as I have progressed in my academic career reading has really taken a backseat. Mainly they make reading such a drag in school and don't really promote reading for pleasure making it synonymous with boring.
It is soooo amazing to see how many adults don't really know how to read, and you know that it is from the lack of practice when they were little. Literacy starts when children are old enough to recognize pictures and that is amazing!!! Why wouldn't you want to take advantage of that, it is sooo cool!
It is true that higher education would make for a stronger society, and I think it is great the attention that literacy has been given recently. The education system is starting to implement more programs, but more help could be used from the communtity as well. Education shouldn't stop when kids leave the campus. Parents and caretakers play just as much as roll as teachers and educators.
Literacy in all grades is the cornerstone of advancement in our society. One issue that is quite controversial is the CSAP test. Our educators are required to "prepare" the students to take this test year after year. There is so much time "wasted" on "preparing" the students to pass a test that other areas are affected. Then after the test, the students finally get to learn other things, besides how to get the best test grade for the teacher or school. This takes care of the mass population in middle and high schools, but what about the kids who don't fit in the box. The kids that have a difficult time reading, writing. Is the same amount of time spent with them as the masses to prepare for the test? No, the kids who are not up to the same standard as the main stream kids are opted out of the testing. Then where do they go? Are they taught the literacy skills that they will need for the "harsh" world? As far as I understand, they are opted out year after year from the test because they will bring down the scores. They are a major part of the drop out rate in our schools. So who is responsible for this tragedy?
Also, the teachers cannot do this alone, the parents and educators, the caretakers, the government, they all need to be held accountable, every child is important, not just the masses.
Hi Riley,
Good job in choosing which pieces of your paper fit best in an online forum. The only thing that you might consider is where you could put visuals and other elements that would add to the appeal of the blog.
